STORAGE HINTS AND TIPS
Follow these easy tips to ensure a hassle-free storage experience.
Packing your items
Focus on packing one room at a time and make sure to clearly label boxes. This will help simplify the unpacking process once you’ve moved from your old location. Use boxes that are designed for moving, this will ensure that they can be easily loaded and handle the weight of each of your items.
Tips for moving
Fragile items such as glassware and dishes can easily break during transit so extra care should be taken to protect them. Individually wrapping items with bubble wrap and filling gaps with paper can help mitigate movement and breaking during transit. Soft moving blankets should be used for items such as gloss or wooden furniture to avoid scratches to glass or varnish.
What not to store
Storage units are a fantastic way to help mitigate stress from a move, however, there are a number of things that shouldn’t be kept in storage. Combustible items including petrol, paint, and solvents should not be put into storage units. Perishable items such as food should also be avoided.
Decluttering your home
Self Storage units are a fantastic way to declutter your home. Seasonal items including summer and winter clothing, decorations and sporting equipment can be kept safe when they’re not in use. Items that you might not use every day such as photo albums, antiques or family heirlooms can be kept secure in a self-storage unit. Please note any valuables must be covered by your own insurance policy.
Packing Materials
Packing materials including cardboard boxes and bubble wrap can make life less stressful. Make sure to buy more than you think you’ll need to avoid having to make another shopping trip. Bunnings Warehouse and Officeworks offer a range of products to help you keep your items safe.
Insurance
Moving house is stressful enough without adding in the possibility of replacing broken items. Home insurance can provide some assurance before, during and after your move. We recommend you take out insurance cover on your goods.
Refrigerators
Defrost refrigerator at least three days before moving. Drain icemakers and water supplies and allow them to thoroughly dry. Remove the trays and drawers from the refrigerator and clean with a mild detergent. Wash down the inside of the refrigerator with a mild detergent. Dust or vacuum the coils on the outside of the refrigerator. When moving the refrigerator, transport upright. Placing the refrigerator on its side could damage some of the refrigeration coils. Tape the doors shut while in transit. When it is placed in a storage unit, remove the tape and leave the door slightly ajar to prevent moisture build-up.
Dishwashers
Unplug and thoroughly clean the dishwasher. Let the dishwasher air dry for at least 24 hours before packing it for moving. Disconnect and clean the hoses. Once these are dry, wrap them in towels or newspaper for protection. Place the hoses inside the dishwasher for easy access.Leave the dishwasher door open for a little bit of time before moving. Tape the cord onto the side of the dishwasher for transport.
Computer Equipment
If you don’t have the original box your computer equipment came in, we recommend you put each piece of computer hardware in a sealed plastic bag (this avoids bugs, accidental spills, dust, etc) with some silica packets inside to absorb moisture. The greatest risk with computers and monitors is breakage from being dropped. Cables should be labelled and simply tied together or stored in a waste-paper bin for easy retrieval.
